Definitions
Includes 2 adults and their dependents (immediate family, same household) under the age of 18 years old.
The Town of Strathmore welcomes people with disabilities and will work together to take reasonable steps within each recreation facility to ensure inclusion in programs and services. It is recognized that there are times when a Support Worker/Aide is needed. There are no admission or registration fees for Support Workers to attend programs or services with a paying customer, although there are expectations:
- Support Workers must remain with the person with a disability at all times.
- If someone is receiving ‘fading support’ to increase independence, the Support Worker doesn’t need to be right beside the person at all times; but should be engaged and participating in the program in the same space as that person (not sitting on the side lines).
- Support workers are expected to step in when they see signs of change in behavior.
2. Upon checking in, please identify yourself as a Support Worker so reception staff are aware not to charge an admission
fee.
3. Support Workers are expected to follow all program & facility rules and procedures. Support Workers should be
prepared to:
- Come dressed appropriately for the activity and wear appropriate clothing/footwear (if applicable).
- Actively participate in all activities alongside the person being supported and be prepared to provide assistance.
Program cancellations and transfers
Cancellations: If you cancel in writing at least 7 business days before the program starts, you’ll receive a refund, minus a $23.71 administrative fee. Cancellations made less than 7 days before the program start are not eligible for a refund.
Transfers: If you need to transfer to a different program, an $11.72 transfer fee will apply. Refunds will not be prorated if a participant misses a day for any reason. Exceptions may be made for injury or illness that prevents participation, with a dated doctor’s note. Other exceptional circumstances may be considered at the Manager’s discretion.
Service animals in all facilities information
Dogs trained to aid or to guide individuals with visual, hearing, or other disabilities are permitted in the facility. The owner must ensure that the service dog is under control at all times. Service dogs must be:
- Trained by an ADI (Assistance Dogs International) accredited organization, or
- Trained by a school that meets the qualifications of the International Guide Dog Federation's standards, or successfully tested through an approved Alberta testing facility (as per the Alberta Service Dogs Act)
- Have training identification, and
- Must wear a service animal vest and appropriate harness.
