Strathmore Forward

The Town's current Municipal Development Plan (MDP) refers to a population of 7,165 in 2000, which around the time of adoption in 2014 had already grown to approximately 12,352 in 2013. This amounted to a population increase of 42% between 2000 and 2013 . Across a more recent 10-year period, the Town’s population has continued to grow from 12,305 in the census year of 2011 to approximately 16,416 in the most recent provincial estimate of 2025 - which amounts to an increase of approximately 33% across this period. 

While the Town's current MDP references a population 50,000, it was prepared more than 10 years ago. From a good land use planning perspective, and with the current regional growth climate in mind, an update and modernization of the Town's MDP is required. This update and modernization seeks to properly  address current planning matters and issues, and to reflect best land use planning practices as it relates to Strathmore's future growth and development.

In short, the Town's MDP is currently under review, and it's time to Strathmore Forward, together.

The Town's current MDP Review is a resumption of the Town's 2019-2020 MDP Review, which was placed on hold due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. The current MDP Review was also paused for a period of time in late-2025 and early-2026 for the municipal general election and to afford Town Council the opportunity to formulate a new strategic plan.

The Town's current MDP Review has now progressed to Phase 3: Refinement & Adopt MDP.

Phase 3 includes:

  • Modular approach to updating the existing MDP.
  • Provision of review and commenting periods on the Town's website for each module.
  • Additional public engagement where necessary and appropriate.
  • Bylaw readings and public hearings for each module as required by the MGA.

The draft version of Module "A" (ie. Bylaw No. 26-07) has been completed and posted for review and comment. The review and commenting period will remain open up to and including the public hearing for Bylaw No. 26-07. Notice of the public hearing for Bylaw No. 26-07 will be provided in accordance with MGA.

We are also currently working on the draft version of Module "B" which is expected to address matters and policies related to community and neighbourhood design, housing, heritage preservation, and environmental management), as well as land use designations and the Town's overall land use concept. Once completed, the draft version of Module "B" will be posted for review and comment.

There are many ways to participate and take part in the public engagement process.

The input received from residents, businesses, and other interested parties and community stakeholders is integral to ensuring that the Town’s MDP provides a solid foundation for guiding future growth and development in the municipality. 

  • IAP2 is an internationally-accepted standard to determining public engagement goals and how in this case different audiences can expect to be involved in the decision-making processes associated with the Town's MDP Review.
