Water Supply and Distribution

Along with our partners, the Town of Strathmore strives to be responsible stewards of our water supply system.

  • Strathmore’s water is supplied via the City of Calgary and is transported to the town using the Strathmore owned East Calgary Regional Waterline (ECRWL).
  • The town's water regularly exceeds regulation and inspection requirements, and is monitored by EPCOR.

The City of Calgary's water comes from the Rocky Mountains west of the city from a basin-like landform called a watershed.

Managing Our Water Supply & Distribution

The taste, odour, and appearance of our drinking water may vary at difference times of the years, specifically spring - due to runoff, and late summer/early fall.
"our source water can experience elevated levels of geosmin, a harmless, naturally occurring compound, in the water in the late summer and early fall.  This can produce a temporary, earthy or musty change to the taste and odour of your water, but it remains safe to drink and continues to meet all guidelines set by provincial and federal health standards."
A change in your water taste, odour or appearance does not mean it is unsafe to drink.

Visit the City of Calgary's website for more information.

Water Mains
A water main is an underground pipe that carries water from your area's water source to your service pipe. A water main breaks occur unexpectedly and can temporarily disrupt the supply of water to your home. Water mains may break due to age, frost action or other factors. If a water main breaks, the Town will act quickly to make repairs. The time it takes to complete a repair and get a water main back into service is highly variable and is influenced by the size of the water main and excavation challenges that can exist due to the proximity to other underground utilities.

Services Valves - 'CC'

Is your Water Service Valve exposed and readily accessible? Is it located on the ground on the outside of your property? Is there a possibility it is overgrown by grass or maybe under a sidewalk, a tree or a bush?

As a homeowner, it is your responsibility and in your best interest to know where the curb stop is on your property and have it readily accessible in case of emergency. The Town of Strathmore will be able to help locate the “CC” for you and see if it is in good working condition.  Connect with the Infrastructure Department to book an appointment; 403-361-2108 / infrastructure@strathmore.ca

It is also important to check the water shutoff valve located inside your home, before the meter, to make sure it is operational. If your shut off is not operational, contact a plumber to replace the valve. It is a good idea to have a separate shut off valve inside your home for your outside tap - so it can be turned off when you are away or during the winter months.

Rain Barrels; balancing a growing population with our own decisions, programs, and actions we continue to manage our resources so residents can trust on their water system for decades to come. At least one rain barrel with a minimum capacity of 220 liters must be provided for new residential developments on lots created after January 1, 2015. Rain barrels need to be shown on the site plan submitted with the development permit. Downspouts must be connected to the rain barrel and, in some cases, the Approving Authority may require one rain barrel for each downspout from a building to manage surface drainage.

UDF Flushing

April 22 to May 9 - Zone 4 (Wildflower, Strathmore Lakes, Westmount & the Canals)

Unidirectional flushing (UDF) is the water main cleaning method EPCOR uses for our flushing of water mains procedure.

UDF simply means guiding water in a single direction through the pipes by systematically closing valves and releasing the water through fire hydrants.

Significant impacts on water services is not expected during the flushing process, and water will remain safe to drink.

However, you may experience temporary low water pressure and temporary discoloration or sediment in your water.

To remove the discoloration, run the water for approximately 2-5 minutes to clear the water line.
