Alley Maintenance Program

Every year, the Town of Strathmore invests in maintaining gravel alleys to improve mobility and conditions for the public. The Town inspects the alley network and schedules repairs in a priority order.

An ideal alley should have a clean, well-maintained appearance, with a driving lane width of 5 meters and a vertical clearance of 5 meters.

Annual maintenance of alleys include:

•    lane grading and hole filling to improve drainage and surface condition
•    compaction of lane as necessary
•    strip back vegetation overgrowth to widen the driving lanes
•    alley re-graveling on a 10-year cycle (contingent on year-to-year budget approval)

Completing the annual program will improve:

•    vehicle and pedestrian travel
•    storm drainage
•    garbage collection
•    emergency services access

Help us complete the annual program quickly and cost-effectively by:

Removing obstacles such as:

  • black and green garbage carts
  • blue recycling carts
  • construction bins and stored material
  • debris and dirt piles
  • low-hanging branches and overgrowth of trees/grass/weeds/shrubs/bushes
  • vehicles, trailers, and equipment
  • garbage

Redirect eavestrough downspouts from draining directly into back lanes.

Obstructions of any kind are not permitted upon or above an alley. Keeping alleys clear of vehicles/trailers/equipment, litter, garbage carts, and vegetation overgrowth helps keep our alleys clean and safe and beautifies our community. (Bylaw 22-06)

Garbage carts are to be returned to a storage location on your property once collection is complete. This helps prevent others from using your carts and losing your carts in a weather event. (Bylaw 21-04)

Eavestrough downspouts are not permitted to release directly onto alleys. Water released onto public roadways, pathways, or other Town lands cause infrastructure damage by eroding surfaces, drainage issues by overwhelming drainage systems, and an increase to maintenance costs by causing more frequent repairs. (Bylaw 13-05)

Winter Road, Sidewalks & Pathways Maintenance

The Town's mandate is to keep priority routes open and safe for the public. To learn more about snow clearing routes and prioritization, view the Winter Road, Pathway and Sidewalk Maintenance Page by clicking the button.

Annual Maintenance Projects Details

Each year, the Town of Strathmore sweeps up tonnes of sand and debris from hundreds of kilometers of town roads. This helps to prevent that material from being washed into our storm drain system and keeps our roads and pathways clean. Street and pathway sweeping may take place year-round without parking restrictions, allowing for proactive maintenance and staff training opportunities.

You may also notice our Parks team using their equipment to sweep grassy areas along various pathways and boulevards. This will improve the quality of the turf, reduce weeds, and help prevent our mowers from shooting rocks when cutting grass.

Full street sweeping typically occurs in May. Follow the Town on social media and check back here to be kept up to date on seasonal scheduling of street sweeping.

Working with the Infrastructure Services team, Public Works paints the Town's transportation network, which can include roads, pathways, crosswalks, parking lots and hydrant markings. This work typically starts after street sweeping is complete.

Every year, the Town of Strathmore invests in maintaining gravel back lanes to improve mobility and conditions for the public. The Town inspects the gravel lane network and schedules repairs in a priority order.

Completing the annual program will improve vehicle and pedestrian travel, storm drainage, garbage collection and emergency services access.

Road defects result from a combination of pavement fatigue and temperature fluctuation. The Public Works team conducts inspections and repairs throughout the year.
Cold weather pothole repairs use a modified cold-patch asphalt. The modified cold-patch displaces any moisture in the pothole, speeding up the repair process.
Warm weather pothole repairs use hot asphalt and compaction rollers to seal up shallow potholes and cracks in road pavement.

The purpose of a rural addressing sign is to help emergency response agencies, such as police, fire, and ambulance, find your home quickly in times of emergency.

Visit Municipal_Address_Signs_In_Rural_Areas (alberta.ca) for more information.

Once the initial sign has been installed, the property owner is responsible for maintenance and eventual replacement of the sign. Replacement signs can be made by sign making companies in Strathmore, Wheatland County and Calgary.
