Alley maintentance

Every year, the Town of Strathmore invests in maintaining gravel alleys/back lanes to improve mobility and conditions for the public. The Town inspects the gravel lane network and schedules repairs in a priority order.

An ideal alley should have a clean, well-maintained appearance, with a driving lane width of five meters and a vertical clearance of five meters.

Typical repairs include:

  • Lane grading to improve drainage and surface condition
  • Compaction of the lane as necessary
  • Strip back overgrowth and widen the driving lanes
  • Alley re-gravelling on a 10-year cycle (contingent on year-to-year budget approval)

Completing the annual program will improve:

  • Vehicle and pedestrian travel
  • Storm drainage
  • Garbage collection
  • Emergency services access

Help us complete the annual program quickly and cost-effectively by:

  • Removing obstacles such as:
    • Black and green carts
    • Blue recycling carts
    • Construction bins and stored material
    • Garbage, debris, and dirt pilese
    • Low-hanging tree branches and overgrowth of grass/weeds/trees/shrubs/bushes
    • Vehicles, trailers, and equipment
    • Redirecting eavestrough downspouts from draining directing into back lanes

Did you know?

  • Obstructions of any kind are not permitted upon or above an alley. Keeping alleys clear of vehicles/trailers/equipment, litter, garbage carts, and vegetation overgrowth helps keep our alleys clean and safe and beautifies our community. (Bylaw 22-06)
  • Garbage carts are to be returned to a storage location on your property once collection is complete. This helps prevent others from using your carts and losing your carts in a weather event. (Bylaw 21-04)
  • Eavestrough downspouts are not permitted to release directly onto alleys. Water released onto public roadways, pathways, or other Town lands causes infrastructure damage by eroding surfaces, drainage issues by overwhelming drainage systems, and an increase in maintenance costs by causing more frequent repairs. (Bylaw 13-05)

If you notice issues in your lane and think our team should take a look, let us know through a Citizen Communication Form.
