Seven counillors sitting around a council table

Since our transition from a village to a town in 1911, Strathmore has been shaped by dedicated leaders and evolving governance. From our first mayor, Edmund W.R. Lambert, to the many councillors who followed, the town’s leadership has reflected a dynamic and growing community.

Over the years, council structures, election processes, and voting rights have changed—sometimes dramatically. Elections were held every two years, while councillors served staggered two-year terms starting in 1912. In rare cases, full council turnover occurred, such as in 1949 when all seven members resigned. Elections were initially in December but moved to February in 1923 and October in 1958, where they remain today. From early acclamations and mid-century mass resignations to the historic election of Strathmore’s first female councillor in 1963, each milestone tells a story of civic duty and progress.

Click here for our Town Hall Time Machine and a listing of the many faces who have pulled up a chair at the council table and helped steer Strathmore’s story, one meeting at a time.
