Information for Voters

Every Canadian citizen has the right to vote. It is how Canadians choose which leaders represent them. Your community is shaped by the outcome of an election. When you take part in an election and express your view, you make democracy work.
  • In the next municipal election, Strathmore voters will vote to elect their Mayor, six Councillors, and School Board Trustees.
  • Voting for your Mayor and Councillors gives you a say in the direction the Town of Strathmore will take.
  • This includes changes and additions to services that impact residents, such as police, fire, roads, parks, recreation programs, waste collection,  water, and municipal enforcement.
  • School Trustees are elected to make decisions on budgets and facilities in your school system.

Things to Know & Answers to Your Questions

Alberta is made up of cities, towns, villages, hamlets, summer villages, municipal districts, and specialized municipalities. These Municipalities are considered corporations and are given powers from the Province of Alberta through various legislation but primarily the Municipal Government Act (MGA)

Under the MGA, municipalities are granted powers by the province for the purpose of

  • Providing good government,
    • Fostering the well‑being of the environment,
    • Fostering the economic development of the municipality,
  • to provide services, facilities or other things that, in the opinion of council, are necessary or desirable for all or a part of the municipality,
  • to develop and maintain safe and viable communities, and
  • to work collaboratively with neighbouring municipalities to plan, deliver and fund intermunicipal services.

These powers are the responsibility of our elected governing body called Town Council. Under the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA), elections are held every four years to provide residents the opportunity to choose their representatives on Strathmore Town Council.

Advanced voting days:

  • Dates: October 15, 2025 and October 17, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Place: Strathmore Centennial Civic Centre, 120 Brent Boulevard

Election day:

  • Date: October 20, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Place: Strathmore Centennial Civic Centre, 120 Brent Boulevard

You are eligible to vote in the municipal election if on election day you:

  • Are registered to vote (new for 2025)
  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Are a Canadian citizen.
  • Are a resident of Strathmore.
(To determine if you are a Town of Strathmore resident please review, Section 48 - Rules of Residence of the Local Authorities Elections Act. Note: You do not have to own property to vote. Property ownership is not a determining factor to vote, all citizens who meet the eligibility requirements above are eligible to vote.)

New for 2025: With the proclamation of the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, municipalities are required to maintain a Permanent Electors Register of residents who are eligible to vote. Information from the Permanent Electors Register will be shared between Elections Alberta and the Town of Strathmore as per the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA) section 49. The information collected will only be used to verify the identification of an elector when compiling or revising the Permanent Electors Register.

Any individual who wishes to vote on Election Day must first be registered. Before you can receive a ballot at the voting polls, you must sign the elector register stating that you meet the qualifications above, rather than receiving a voter card in the mail.

Voterlink is the Province’s online source that allows voters to register to vote for the first timeupdate existing voter registration information, or check if they are registered to vote. Please review your details, or register, by going to voterlink.ab.ca prior to September 2025.

In order to vote, a voter must prove their identity and address. You can do this by:

  1. If you are on the Elector Register, producing one piece of identification issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial or local) or an agency of the government, that includes a photograph (ex. driver’s licence, motor vehicle operator’s licence); or
  2. If you either aren’t on the Elector Register or do not have the above described ID, making a statement that you are eligible to vote in the presence of an officer at the voting station, on a provided form, and validate your address by producing:
    1. One piece of identification issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial or local) or an agency of the government, that includes a photograph, your name and your address;
    2. One pieces of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer, that establishes the person’s name and current address. To view a list of acceptable ID please read the Local Authorities Elections Act
    3. Another Elector, who is on the registered voter list, validates your address as per the Local Authorities Elections Act

Voting stations will be set up in designated nursing homes, long-term care facilities, hospitals, and similar facilities for the purpose of taking resident's votes. You can contact us for more information at elections@strathmore.ca

Any voter who is unable to attend a voting station on Election Day or advance voting station because of physical disability may be able to have election workers attend at their home during the hours a voting station is open, in order to take their vote.

To apply for this service, email elections@strathmore.ca

The Town of Strathmore does not fund or otherwise coordinate, administer, deliver, or advertise for candidates running in the municipal election. The Town of Strathmore focuses on all legislative and quality control requirements in administering the election, and remains entirely separate from campaign activities of interested candidates. However, you may see forums or debates put on by groups or organizations within the community.

On October 18, 2024, Municipal Affairs proclaimed the Municipal Statutes Amendment Act which made several amendments to the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA). The amendments related to municipal elections came into effect on October 31, 2024.
