This work is part of the Town's Central Trunk Sewer Upgrade, a major infrastructure project designed to support Strathmore's current and future growth.
The need for these upgrades was identified in the Town's 2017 Master Servicing Study for Sanitary System Upgrades, which evaluated how future growth would impact Strathmore's sewer system. The study found that several areas of the network required improvements, including the Central Trunk Sewer which serves approximately 80 per cent of the community.
The overall project has been divided into multiple phases. Phase 1, a $4 million investment in Strathmore's underground infrastructure, is currently under construction and extends from north of Archie Klaiber Trail behind the Fire Hall to south of the UFA yard. An earlier section serving the Strath Point Plaza development was completed prior to construction beginning on the current phase. Work is expected to continue through the summer, with completion anticipated by mid-September. Parts of Archie Klaiber Trail will be temporarily closed mid to late July.
Design work for Phase 2 is expected to begin later this year.
The sewer upgrade follows another important infrastructure investment completed earlier this spring: the approximately $4 million Wildflower Reservoir Upgrade, first identified in the 2020 Water Master Servicing Study. Although temporary water restrictions were required during construction, the project increased Strathmore’s pumping capacity and strengthened our ability to meet future water demand.
These types of projects often go unnoticed once the work is done. They typically don't come with ribbon cuttings or the visibility of a new playground or recreation facility, yet water and wastewater infrastructure are among the most important investments a municipality can make.
Together, these projects are part of Council's commitment to managing growth responsibly, supporting economic development, and making strategic investments that will benefit residents for decades to come.
