Council Meeting Highlights - May 15, 2024

Meeting Date: May 15, 2024. 

In attendance: Mayor Fule, Deputy Mayor Langmaid, Councilor Mitzner, Councilor Montgomery, Councilor Peterson, Councilor Wegener, Councilor Wiley. 

During the council meeting, Council received a delegation from Tour Alberta for Cancer. The delegation thanked Council and the community for their support in 2023 and gave an update on their event plans for 2024. 

1. Consent Agenda 

Council adopted the following reports through the consent agenda: 

  • Regular Council Meeting Minutes – May 1, 2024 

  • Alberta Municipalities Resolution 2024 – Alberta First Responders Radio Communications System Equipment Funding  

  • Corporate Strategic Plan & Financial Plan Quarterly Report (Q4 2023)  

  • Proclamation – World Family Doctor Day

  • Sacred Heart Church Dedication Mass Invitation 

Please note, Council decided to defer consideration of the Urban Hen Bylaw and Canadian Overnight Repo Rate Average (CORRA) Transition to a future meeting. 

2. Bylaws 

Council adopted the 2024 Property Tax Rate Bylaw 24-13. To support the Town’s essential municipal services, including community safety, roads and infrastructure, and essential programming, while continuing to minimize inflationary impacts on the community, Town Council has voted to set the property tax rate increase at 5.6 %. 

Council approved a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Declaration. All other business items were approved through the consent agenda.

4. Councillor Information and Inquiries 

Councillor Montgomery presented a Notice of Motion regarding Racial Equality Review. This Notice of Motion will be considered by Council during the June 5, 2024, Regular Council Meeting. 

5. Closed Meeting 

Closed meeting discussions are confidential as the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Municipal Government Act. However, one of the public motions Council made was regarding adoption of Policy No. 1111. This policy establishes a grant program for local medical offices, with the hopes of attracting internationally trained doctors to Strathmore. Once signed, this policy will be posted on the Town’s website.
