Council adopted the minutes from the January 14, 2026 Committee of the Whole.
DELEGATION
MLA Chantelle de Jonge
MLA de Jonge joined Council to give an update on government initiatives that impact the Town of Strathmore and surrounding areas. Including:
Health care
- The Shasta Seniors Residence is beginning construction in town, with 54 long-term care, 36 supportive living, and 6 hospice spaces.
- As a first step in the Rural Hospital Enhancement Program, the Strathmore Hospital is undergoing a facility condition assessment and functional evaluation, which should be completed by spring 2026.
MLA de Jonge then recognized Council on their initiative to provide grants encouraging new physicians in Town (Physician Sponsorship Grant and Physician Incentive Program), because of these efforts Strathmore has now welcomed three new doctors and added a new clinic.
Grants
- MLA de Jonge stated that the Strathmore and District Ag Society recently received 5 million dollars to go towards the Western Events and Culture Centre.
- The Strathmore Fire Department has become one of the province’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) teams, receiving over 1.4 million dollars from the province to support personnel, training, and equipment so they are able to respond to wildfires across the province and at home. This funding has also allowed the station to move to 24/7 coverage.
- The Truth North Society has received over 3.6 million dollars in grants for their transitional housing project.
- The Strathmore Overnight Shelter has received $95,000 for an expansion.
- The local Lions Club received $125,000 to support upgrades at the splash park.
Many of these grants came from Minister Tanya Fir’s Community Facility Enhancement Program, MLA de Jonge encouraged other programs looking for upgrades to reach out for help in applying for future funding.
Education and Infrastructure
- Westmount School is scheduled for an upgrade, replacing the current K-6 with a full K-9.
- Design working happening for highway 817, and there will be lighting improvements done at highway 817 and 564.
- There are also three interchanges underway between Strathmore and Calgary. One at the future De Havilland Field site, one at Chestermere High School and one at Conrich.
- To improve safety for those who travel Glenmore to Calgary, the intersection at Rainbow Road will be getting either a traffic circle or lights later this year.
Council then went in camera to further discuss their advocacy strategy and strategic plan for their term.
