HEAL

HEAL Our Future is a community development initiative which aims to create a community environment that supports healthy eating and active living in Strathmore and area.  In May of 2007, a group of interested community members from Strathmore came together with the goal of working towards healthy eating and active living.  This group meets once a month and their goal is to enhance positive changes within the social and physical environments.

Based on a community survey and conversations with community members, the coalition has decided to focus on promoting walking in Strathmore.  The coalition currently receives support from an Alberta Health Services Community Development Coordinator and is looking to move forward with some community projects.  Numerous partnerships have been established that can be drawn upon for project work.

Events and activities organized in whole or in part by HEAL our Future and its members include:

  • The Great Skate: A  wintertime activity that promotes the use of indoor and outdoor facilities for skating enjoyment. Each year in February on Family Day Monday Kinsmen Park is the sight for family fun.
  • Winter Walk Day: A mid-winter walking day that encourages the community to get outside and      walk, even when the weather isn't perfect.
  • Tri-Smore: A fun, family centred triathlon  event focusing on the ‘come try it’ aspect. In its second year it was a great success and is growing each year.
  • Alberta  Walkability Roadshow:      A learning and strategy building event complete with international walking consultants and presenters engaging with the community to promote and expand walking and the walkability of our community.  In preparation for the Roadshow, HEAL our Future enlisted the support of the Town of Strathmore in having the International Charter for Walking signed.
  • Mapping of community pathways including distances.
  • Sport      Equipment Swap:      Encouraging activity by providing a opportunity for equipment to be shared or traded. Skate swap is ongoing with space and skate sharpening provided by Home Hardware.

This past year, Strathmore HEAL was recognized with a Community Choosewell Award for Southern Alberta: Reducing Barriers to Healthy Living for tweens, teens and adultsWe were encouraged to continue with our work in making Strathmore a healthier place to live.
