The Alberta Government is changing the classification of certain weed species in our Province. It is important for home owners and residents to stay up to date on new weed species as well as some of the more established plants. As information becomes available, the town of Strathmore will be providing a link to the new regulations on our website. In the meantime, please reference the Gardner’s Guide to Non-invasive Plants. It can be found on http://www.invasiveplants.ab.ca or come to the town office to pick-up the leaflet distributed by the Alberta Invasive Plants Council.
Vegetation Management Program
The Parks Department currently has a Vegetation Management Program. This program is aimed at controlling dandelions (nuisance) weeds, noxious weeds and restricted weeds.
The Government of Alberta's weed control act, enforces it's regulations on all countys, municipalities and private sectors to ensure weeds are controlled or eraticated. The Town of Strathmore has a Weed Inspector that monitors and enforces such regulations.
The three types of weeds are:
The method used by the Town of Strathmore, is decided in conjunction with our Weed Inspector, Applicator and Parks Manager. All Municipal Reserves in Town are monitored closely for high levels of infestation (e: Dandelions) and will dictate what application is needed. Heavy infestation will have a blanket herbicide application, moderate infestation will be spot sprayed and minor infestation will be spot sprayed.
The control of dandelions has been a high priority for the citizens of Strathmore, and future programs will continue to see the use of chemical herbicides diminish with the methods used over the last couple of years. This year will bring with it the introduction of Sectoring the Municipal Reserves in Strathmore, to contol dandelions every second year instead of on a yearly basis. This will lower the herbicide application amounts and subsequently lower costs.
Noxious weeds in Strathmore are controlled with proper herbicides by our contracted applicator and monitored on a monthly basis throughout the summer.
Restricted weeds are monitored and eraticated immediately by the Town appointed Weed Inspector and the Town contracted applicator.
Please refer to the Weeds Control Act of Alberta for any further questions. |
